Summertime family fitness fun
For most children the beginning of summer marks the end of the school year. That means no more classes-physical education among them.
According to experts from the American Council on Exercise (ACE), many physical education instructors offer their students the opportunity to get fit in unique ways during the school year with classes in rock climbing, self-defense and inline skating.
Keep that momentum going during the summer months and think of enjoyable ways to get your children out of the house and exercising on a regular basis. The American Heart Association recommends children meet their quota by participating in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity a day.
Instead of making exercise seem like just another chore for the children, encourage fitness in your home by making physical activity something that's fun for the entire family.
Active children are most likely to become active adults, so experts recommend that parents play a vital part in their child's physical well-being. Begin by picking activities in which each family member can participate.
Take advantage of the warm weather by getting outside and going on a nature walk together or by simply tossing a football or Frisbee in the yard or at a park.
Parents can also try to stay cool on sweltering days by doing a few laps with the children in the pool or catching a breeze while bike riding.
Moms and dads should also consider becoming members of the neighborhood gym or community center. Each family member can benefit by using the provided workout facilities or by joining a team sport.
When you make exercise a priority in your home you not only keep your family in shape, you also help to establish lifelong appreciation for physical fitness.
