Gustafson named Life Member of the Ladies European Tour
(16th November 2006) -- Sophie Gustafson won the Siemens Austrian Ladies Open in September and, as a consequence, she has earned Life Membership of the Ladies European Tour (LET).
With her victory, Gustafson earned the minimum 20 points required to be eligible for Life Membership. Having joined the Tour in 1994, she also met the second requirement with more than 10 years as a member of the Tour.
Gustafson, 32, will receive lifetime eligibility for all LET standard ranking full-field events as from the 1st December 2006 - and will no longer be required to pay annual subscription fees.
“This is certainly fantastic news!” Gustafson said. “I've always been extremely proud to have LET as my home tour and to be able to be a life member is something I have always wanted to achieve.”
Gustafson, the eighth player to receive Life Membership of the LET, won 21 times around the world, including 12 times on the LET, and is one of the most naturally talented ball strikers anywhere in women’s golf.
She won the LET Order of Merit in 2000 and 2003, having won three times in Europe in each of those years.
Her LPGA career has been just as successful, as the Swede has earned four victories since 2000 and more than $3.4 million in career prize money. The 2000 season was perhaps her most successful, as Gustafson captured the Chick-fil-A Charity Championship hosted by Nancy Lopez and the Weetabix Women’s British Open, the year before the event became a major championship.
After a return to form with a win in Austria and a tied second place finish at this season’s final major championship, the Weetabix Women’s British Open, Gustafson said: “I'm fairly happy with 2006. It was great to be able to win again. I had some other good chances that I let slip away but all in all I'm pretty happy with what I have done this year.”
